Hi there!

I haven't writen for quite some time. Yet, I haven't been idle, believe me. The result is this entry about a simple thing, TV. Why do I think it's bad to the bone? Are there any good points about it? Read on and see!

The pros

I have no right whatsoever to claim that TV is absolutely bad. There are a lot of examples when it actually works. It brings people together, encourages discussion, becomes a nice spare time activity. As far as I'm concerned I can't imagine me and my friends enjoying a few pints without the assist of a good (but not that often) football game to see. It really provides motivation to go out and spend some time with the people we like. What is more, we often end up talking about sport, current events or love life (yeah, right) to the late night hours.

Apart from that, TV is a great source of knowledge and entertainmnet. If I really feel like watching TV, I most often look for documentaries. They are fantastic entertainment and you can learn a lot from them. I also like sitcoms and very often watch them to kill time.

The cons

If TV is such a great thing, why have I decided not to install it in my apartament? There are very many reasons and I'll focus only on the most important ones.

Even though you can watch sport, documentaries or sitcoms, TV is still ful of the most stupifying crap I can ever imagine. Sometimes I think that TV channels have a competition to produce the most idiotic show, attract wide audience and sell adverrtisements. Why would anyone want to follow the very intriguing adventures of a priest who rides a bike and is a self-made detective, or get excited about the next celebrity who is going to dance and pretend they really enjoy it? How can opinions of people who are more than wealthy and don't face the ordinary hardships of life  be a good basis for making up my own mind? Why should I listen and see all these indivuals who on one hand call for freedom and on the other support dramas which are based on stereotypes? There are some things in this world I'll never get to understand.

Yet, everything mentioned above does not even get close to the utmost reason. When you watch TV you do not decide what you see but somebody else does. You lose control over your time, what your eyes see and what your ears hear. OK, it may seem that you can always change the channel, but does it really change anything? People are tied to their sofas at a given time, on a given day, every week to see something which a John has decided to show them. How incredibly tricky way to teach you do things which are OK for John but not really for you. One day you'll realise you've put your fate in the hands of individuals who don't know you exist, yet control you. Terrifying, isn't it?

Why do people watch it, anyway?

That's a good question. I couldn't find the answer for a long, long time until one of my students opened my eyes to the very obvious truth. People get emotionally involved, attached to TV shows and characters. The more you see it, the stronger the bond is. The stronger the bond, the less of you and your life. The less of you and your life, the fewer decisions you make. The fewer decisions you make, the more others control you. See?

The ONLY solution

There are actually two. Let's face it, you can't really go without watching TV. Yet nowadays, you can regain control on what you see and hear. First, turn off the TV, then turn on your computer and use the Internet to watch what you want, when you want and without advertisements. No brainwashing, no ties to the sofa, no uncontrolled emotional bonds. Is it illegal? Who cares? Do you really think that what they do with people on TV should be?

That's all folks!

I hope I've managed to present my standpoint about the telly. Hope you find some intriguing thoughts in this post and get motivated to share your ideas!

See you!
